Assuming you run a properly sized propller and a hull that doesn't have problems, the formula below will result in a reasonable performing Airboat across various conditions.

(Total loaded boat weight) / 8 = (required minimum hp)

In terms of thrust to total weight then,

(Maximum static thrust)/(Total loaded boat weight) >= 0.5

How much thrust you get from a given unit of hp will vary greatly from setup to setup due to propeller and rigging choices.

Lastly, exactly how much thrust you need per unit of weight will also vary based on setup due to thrust center line, shape of hull, choice of hull bottom surface, etc.

So, the above two formulas are reasonable minimum targets. The higher the ratio of thrust to weight the better.

You have a large boat. So, don't skimp on power if you have the option not to.

Good luck with your build!

Suzuki G13.

Length 12' to 15' Beam 82" Maximum HP aprox. 90 Transom Height 14" center, 18" corners Side Height 18" Approximate Draft 6" Approximate Weight 965 lbs. Fuel Capacity 14 Gallons

Measure your Airboat HP using Thrust and Blast Speed

With a simple thrust test & a small “wind mill” (an anemometer) you can measure and calculate your airboat’s actual delivered horse power. You can see if what you have been told about your engine is true!

Follow me through with something here on how to determine your airboat’s engine Horse Power (HP) by measuring your boat & propeller’s static thrust together with rearward airspeed produced at that thrust measurement.

In linear motion HP calculations by accepted formulas, one can measure force (In our case, the static thrust of an airboat) in pounds, multiply that value by the velocity (in feet per minute) of the air blast immediately behind the prop, and then divide the result by the constant 33,000 to determine the value of the horsepower being delivered by the propeller.

If your propeller is say 95% efficient (and most models are at least that efficient), then inflate the resulting number by 5% (divide by .95) to get a realistic value of the HP at the RPM used to get that thrust measurement. This procedure measures your engine HP in real time operation on your airboat. With these results, you can also solve for your engine torque at that RPM.

This formula is force (pounds of steady thrust) times velocity of the air moving away from the propeller (the prop blast speed in feet per minute) divided by the constant 33000 (which is a one HP rating of 33000 pounds lifted one foot in one minute) the result then equals the HP of the delivering power source, (the propeller). You can see these formulas on the internet at:

http://www.iprocessm...rt/formulas.htm

As an aside, as many know already & you can see at the above website, the formula for determining rotational forces (Rotational HP) is the relationships of torque & RPM to determine HP using the accepted constant of 5252 as a divider. One can solve for an individual value if the other two are known. For instance, if you know torque (say 400 lbs. ft.) and RPM (say 3500) then 3500 X 400 /5250 = 267 HP in this combination of motor speed and torque. If you know HP & RPM, you can solve for torque. If you know torque and HP, you can solve for RPM, etc. The same interactive ability is there for linear motion HP computations.

Here is where I am going with this. If an anemometer (an airspeed measuring device able to record airspeeds of say over 100 MPH as might be found on a home weather station) was mounted closely behind the spinning propeller (say within five feet or so) during a thrust test, you could measure the velocity of the air thrust blast behind the propeller.

A thrust test can be as simple as having the boat well secured on a free standing trailer with a tongue wheel on hard & level ground (or pavement). Attach the airboat with a chain or cable (ropes are to “stretchy”) to an oak tree with a scale in line. (Go borrow a scale somewhere). Use about a 15 foot yoke from each side of the rear of the trailer to the main chain. Have a friend placed ahead of and way off to the side to watch the scale through a hunting rifle scope to read it. Be sure of your attachments and “Be Safe”.

To place the anemometer in the prop blast airstream you might get your rigging for the thrust test set up and then with a post hole digger, place a sturdy post in the ground about 5 feet behind the propeller where the chain would become ‘tight for the test”. Set the top of the post about 2 feet up into the prop blast airstream. Mount your anemometer on the top of the post and run your wires or tubes down the post and then off to where you would read these measurement results. If your unit is a direct reading device then have your friend read it directly with the rifle scope during the test.

When you have your two readings, thrust and speed, then multiply the thrust reading in pounds (Record the RPM of your engine during the test for later calculations) by the air blast velocity in feet per minute as transmitted or read directly by the rifle scope from the anemometer. (If your anemometer reads in MPH then first multiply that MPH reading by the constant 88 to get feet per minute). Then divide by 33,000 to determine the HP produced through and by the propeller.

If the propeller model being used were nearly perfect in its design and application, the answer would be very near a previously determined dyno rating of the engine being tested. That is if you had such a report for your engine, it would serve to prove the above test results, and/or serve to verify what your engine builder told you! The assumption here though is that you do not have a dyno report and are measuring “first time” for your engine HP.

However, if you did have a previous accurate dyno report of your engine (or otherwise knew the HP at a given RPM), then you could use this test procedure to determine a value for the effective efficiency of your propeller model by solving for a percentage difference between the previously known engine HP less actual delivered HP (determined from this test) for comparison to other propeller models. For example, if such a propeller HP calculation resulted in a value of say 475 HP while being driven by a known 500 HP engine, the loss would be 25 HP and represents 5%. Your propeller then could be said to be 95% efficient.

An example to give credence to this linear motion HP formula and calculations is our Signature series of propellers that has been tested on a dyno’ed 300 HP at 2800 RPM angle valve Lycoming O-540. The thrust was measured (as described above) from the airboat on a free standing trailer by chain to an oak tree with inline scales at 1200 exact pounds of steady thrust at 2800 RPM. Being a direct drive aircraft engine, there was no loss of HP to the belts or gears of a reduction unit. The math for these linear HP calculations is;

Multiply the 300 HP of the engine times the 33000 constant explained above and get 9,900,000. Then divide by the 1200 pounds of measured thrust. This results in an air mass rearward velocity of 8,250 feet per minute. Divide this by the constant 88 and you get 93.75 miles per hour of prop blast velocity. If I had measured air blast velocity at say 95 MPH, while measuring 1200 pounds of thrust, I could have computed that I had 300 HP. So you can see how the factors interact.

I recently looked at the old design notes for our Signature blade and found that I had designed the propeller to be a 36” pitch and achieve about 95 miles per hour air movement at 2800 RPM. It was expected during the design process that it would take 300 rotational HP to achieve that RPM. (This is also an example of achieving four pounds of thrust per HP, 1200/300 = 4.)

I have always felt that I got very lucky when I designed the Signature some years ago and apparently my intuition was working in fine mode then to arrive so nearly to 100% efficiency of propeller design. I have said many times that if I tried to do it again, I might not be so lucky.

I would be happy to discuss these procedures directly or personally should one want to do these tests on their airboat. For instance, I would help with calculations or further describe the setups. Perhaps several airboaters would share in a round of tests.

Look up anemometers on the internet. There are several types and you can spend little or lots depending on the make and model. Or you could maybe borrow one from someone’s home weather station. (Hopefully, not at midnight).

Send me a PM if further interested.

David Wine
